Sea Grant workshop to focus on working waterfronts

The Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium will host “Balancing Costal Needs: Working Waterfronts on the Coast” from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, at the Mississippi State University Coastal Research and Extension Service at 1815 Popps Ferry Road in Biloxi.

Continuing development pressures along the Coast are resulting in less access to waterways for waterdependent businesses. While each community must define working waterfronts for itself, actions should be taken to ensure access for industries, such as shipbuilding, seafood processing and commercial and recreational fishing.

Sea Grant and the Mississippi Coastal Resources Management Program invite the public to participate in this community forum to discuss issues related to working waterfronts, hear about legal/financial options to help support them and learn about actions that have been taken in other communities. Registration for the workshop is free, and lunch will be provided. Seating is limited. To register, contact Jody Thompson at (251) 438-5690 or thomp13@auburn.edu before May 31.
