High school teachers from across Alabama convened this summer in Spanish Fort, Ala., for an Advanced K-12 Aquascience/Aquaculture workshop sponsored by MASGC with support from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and Gadsden State Community College. The workshop exposed teachers to ideas to increase the potential of their existing K-12 programs. The advanced topics covered during this workshop included introductions to fish reproduction, advanced filtration, pond dynamics and aquatic ecology applications in the classroom. In addition, funding is a central issue to aquaculture/aquascience programs of all sizes, so the workshop included tips and techniques for finding and writing grants to support programs. As more schools compete for these funds, the programs will become more creative in delivering hands-on and subject-based materials to students through aquaculture and aquascience. |
