D'Abramo Leaves MASGC Position

Lou D’Abramo, who has worked with MASGC for the past five years as associate Director, has been named dean of the graduate school and associate vice president of academic affairs at Mississippi State University.

Lou D'Abramo During his time at MASGC, D’Abramo was instrumental in the process that culminated in the establishment of a strategic plan for the Gulf of Mexico and included the designation of MASGC areas of research. He also was named a W.L. Giles Distinguished Professor, one of the highest honors MSU can give a faculty member. The award is an honorary distinction based distinguished scholarship as evidenced by a record of outstanding research, teaching, service and national or international status.

Upon leaving, D’Abramo said, “I am very fortunate to have helped develop MASGC’s research strategic plan that will, hopefully, be an effective guide for Sea Grant and other groups toward a cooperative effort to address important issues within the Gulf of Mexico. Also, it has been a pleasure to work with such dedicated members of the MASGC Management Team and professional staff. I will truly miss MASGC.”

As the director of MASGC, LaDon Swann will find it hard to replace D’Abramo.

“Based on my experience working with Lou, MSU made a great selection,” Swann said. “Lou used his strong research background to improve the quality of MASGC’s research program. Being located at MSU’s main campus and in close proximity to other non-coastal member institutions, he helped to increase the number and overall quality of the proposals submitted to Sea Grant. Lou is a personal friend, and I wish him great success.”
