Mississippi team displaying their trophyFive students of Long Beach High School in Mississippi were top winners over 15 other teams from 12 high schools in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle that competed in the Hurricane Bowl, the annual regional ocean sciences bowl, sponsored in part by MASGC, and the first round of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). The event was held Feb. 9 in Ocean Springs, Miss., at the J.L. Scott Marine Education Center. The winning team included coach Hale Switzer, Brandon Atwell, Kasey Schultz, Jason Kneeland, Krystal Kuhagen and Anil Acharya.

The competition included question-and-answer “buzzer” rounds, team challenge questions, educational field trips and social activities that encouraged interaction among student peers and with marine scientists. NOSB is a program of the Consortium for Oceanographic Research & Education (CORE) located in Washington, D.C., and supports 25 regional competitions across the country.

The Long Beach High School team will represent the Central Gulf Coast Region at the National Ocean Sciences Bowl to be held in Seward, Alaska, April 25-27, when they will compete against 24 other regional winning teams from around the United States
