Mississippi Team Wins Hurricane Bowl

The Poplarville High School team, dressed as pirates took top honros at the Hurricane Bowl.Five students of Poplarville High School in Mississippi were victorious over 18 other teams from Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle that competed in the Hurricane Bowl, the annual regional ocean sciences bowl, sponsored in part by MASGC, and the first round of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB®). The event was held Feb. 10 in Ocean Springs, Miss. at the J.L. Scott Marine Education Center (MEC). The winning team, dressed as pirates, included coach Mel Hall, Stradford Goins, Franky Garcia, Garrick Aube, Brett Barlow and Michael Kammer. In the NOSB final competition, held in April at Stony Brook University in New York, the Poplarville team won the James D. Watkins Sportsmanship Award for demonstrating the best sportsmanship throughout the competition.

The competition included question-and-answer “buzzer” rounds, team challenge questions, educational field trips and social activities that encouraged interaction among student peers and with marine scientists. NOSB is a program of the Consortium for Oceanographic Research & Education (CORE) located in Washington, D.C. and supports 25 regional competitions across the country.
