Communities receive grants to better prepare for hazards

The Coastal Storms Program (CSP), in conjunction with MASGC and NOAA, recently selected to fund seven community resilience-related projects from a variety of local governments, non-profit organizations and community-university partnerships. The CSP is a nationwide effort to help coastal residents reduce the impacts that storms have on their families, communities, property and the environment. The program has a history of providing an array of tools and services in the pilot areas, which have included improved observing systems, forecast models, decision support tools and outreach and extension activities to enhance community resilience.

Projects from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama were solicited, and the selected projects are related to local government planning and preparedness, faith-based community resilience, hazard risk rating and mitigation, storm-resilience television programs and sea-level rise/storm surge studies. Combined, the Gulf of Mexico CSP will fund more than $500,000 of storm resilience-related projects intended to improve awareness and understanding of how planning decisions affect hazard impacts in the region.

The goal of the Gulf of Mexico CSP is to provide financial and technical assistance to improve communication about landuse development and hazard impacts through education and products.
