Oral histories project wins award for student

Michael StieberMichael Stieber, a graduate student in the history department at the University of South Alabama and an archaeologist for the University of South Alabama’s Center for Archeological Studies, was awarded the Chad Smith Student Travel Grant worth $310 for his presentation at the North American Society for Oceanic History, Steamship Historical Society of America and National Maritime Historical Society’s Annual Conference held May 13 – 17 in Vallejo, Calif.

Funded by MASGC, Steiber’s paper was titled “Using Oral Histories of Waterfront-Related Pursuits in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, to Explain the Declining Industry.” His research was based on filmed and recorded interviews with fishermen and other seafood industry workers from the area. An oral history archive and the edited footage from the project will serve local residents and researchers alike by offering rare glimpses into the waning lifeways of Bayou La Batre fishermen. The recorded interviews document how the culture of fishing and related industries have changed over the years.

The edited interviews will be available online at a later date.
